Fox Sports: UNC suspends Hairston indefinitely

North Carolina suspended leading scorer P.J. Hairston from the basketball team on Sunday night, hours after state police pulled him over for driving 93 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Team spokesman Steve Kirschner announced the junior guard's indefinite suspension in a three-sentence statement.

It marked the latest off-court misstep for Hairston, who had been cited twice in the span of a month while driving a rental vehicle linked to a convicted felon. Authorities dropped one set of those charges last week.

This time, Hairston was cited for speeding and careless and reckless driving Sunday afternoon after the North Carolina Highway Patrol pulled him over on southbound Interstate 85 near Salisbury, 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon said.

Hairston, who was driving a 2008 Acura, was cited and released, and faces an Aug. 30 court date in Rowan County, Gordon said.

Hairston previously was cited for speeding in a 2012 Camaro on May 13 in a vehicle that was rented under a woman's name sharing the home address of Haydn Patrick ''Fats'' Thomas.

Thomas' name also appears on rental records for the 2013 GMC Yukon that Hairston was driving on June 5 when he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license at a checkpoint in Durham, N.C.

Prosecutors dismissed the June charges after Hairston produced proof he had a driver's license and had completed a drug assessment program, Elizabeth Tapley with the Durham County clerk of court's office said last week.

Two weeks ago, North Carolina coach Roy Williams said Hairston would face ''serious consequences'' after his arrest, though he hadn't yet determined a punishment.

At that time, Williams said he was considering several possible punishments, including suspension, but said then that he would wait ''until the process is complete'' to decide.

Hairston averaged 14.6 points in 34 games as a sophomore last season.

New Report Released on Impact of Proposed Santa Maria Energy?Project

Santa Barbara decision makers now enjoy a significantly broader menu of choices when confronting the 88,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases Santa Maria Energy?s proposed new onshore oil development is expected to generate during peak production, thanks to an expanded environmental impact report just released last week. The new analysis was prepared after county planning commissioners expressed concern earlier this year that their options regarding greenhouse-gas mitigation was too restricted. At that point, county staff had proposed giving the 126-well project a thumbs up, assuming it could reduce greenhouse-gas emissions 26 percent below 1990 levels. On the table now are options to reduce emissions by 50 percent and by 90 percent through the year?2050.

In deference to climate-change legislation, Santa Barbara officials have insisted on a threshold of 10,000 metric tons, but because that limit is not written into county rules or regulations, decision makers enjoy some latitude. ?It really gets down to an issue of fairness,? said county energy planner Kevin Drude. ?How much can we expect one applicant to shoulder the burden of dealing with our cumulative responsibility as a society for greenhouse gases?? he asked. According to the new analysis, all of the greenhouse-gas-reduction scenarios have been deemed feasible, though the more restrictive are considerably more expensive. All scenarios rely upon the existence of a statewide cap-and-trade system to achieve their?objectives.

Attorney Nathan Alley with the Environmental Defense Center argued in favor of the 90 percent reduction target, insisting it?s consistent with past county practices and also with former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger?s executive decree on how the state should respond to the threat of climate change. A 90 percent reduction, he pointed out, is the only option that would get the proposed oil and gas plant?s greenhouse gas emissions below the 10,000 metric tons threshold. Drude and other planners have noted that Santa Barbara County generates a relatively small amount of greenhouse gases compared to other counties, and that traffic?????both in the county and statewide?????is the biggest producer. Even so, insisted Alley, projects like Santa Maria Energy need to be mitigated to the maximum extent. ?Greenhouse gases are a global problem,? he said. ?We have to be able to say our relative contribution to California and the rest of the world is as small as?possible.?

Santa Maria Energy is proposing to build 126 new onshore wells that will extract oil loosened from their deposits deep within diatomaceous earth by means of intense steam injection. The two steam generators, powered by gas, are responsible for most of the greenhouse gases the project would create. The County Planning Commission is scheduled to revisit the issue later in August, but no matter the result, it?s all but inevitable the matter will be decided by the county supervisors. Already supervisors Salud Carbajal and Janet Wolf have jumped in, lodging conflict-of-interest charges against a Santa Maria Energy public relations contractor?????Andrea Costa?????who also happened to serve on the Air Pollution Control District. Although Costa, who also sits on the Lompoc City Council, insisted there was no conflict of interest, she announced last week that she?s leaving Santa Maria Energy to take a job?elsewhere.

These a--holes, they always get away."?MSNBC, which has been broadcasting much of the trial, implemented a seven-second delay after the swear word made it through to the broadcast.

The Knock-Knock Joke

The defense also got a lot of attention during opening statements for attorney Don West's poorly received knock-knock joke. He said to the courtroom: ?"Sometimes, you have to laugh to keep from crying. So let me, at considerable risk, let me say: I'd like to tell you a little joke. ...?Here's how it goes: knock, knock. Who's there? George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman who? All right, good, you're on the jury." He later apologized.

Rachel Jeantel's Testimony

Rachel Jeantel, a 19-year-old who was on the phone with Trayvon Martin right before he died, took the stand to testify about what was said during that phone call. Jeantel was considered the prosecution's star witness, but her testimony became a boon for Zimmerman's team after inconsistencies in her story emerged. She was mocked online, and The Smoking Gun published a series of incriminating tweets that had been deleted from her account before she testified.

The 'Celebration Cones' Instagram Post

Defense attorney Don West's daughter posted a photo to Instagram of her and West eating "celebration" ice cream cones after a day in court. The photo, which had the caption "we beat stupidity," went viral online the day after Rachel Jeantel testified, although it was taken earlier in the week. Prosecutors later asked for an inquiry into the photo, and West apologized and said he wasn't aware it had been posted online.

The Skype Testimony That Went Wrong

Several people tried to interrupt the Skype testimony of one of Zimmerman's former college professors by incessantly calling one of the accounts being used for the session. The testimony had to be halted and?defense attorney Mark O'Mara said, "There's now a really good chance that we're being toyed with, just so you know." The judge became visibly frustrated and demanded the defense ditch the Skype session and call the witness on a different number.

The Accidental Leak Of Zimmerman's Personal Data

Prosecutors inadvertently?displayed a document containing Zimmerman's social security and telephone numbers?among other personal information to the courtroom, and the document was aired on CNN. The numbers were mistakenly not redacted from the document before they were displayed in court.

The circus-like televised trial has further polarized public opinion. Conservative columnist Anne Coulter called the situation a "fake case of how racist America is out trying to rape and murder black people." Days earlier, Fox News "liberal voice" Bob Beckel called Zimmerman a "wannabe cop who didn't like black people."

Closing arguments concluded Friday. Many expect the drama to continue after the verdict. The Washington Post reported America has legitimate fears of riots if the jury doesn't bring back a guilty verdict. One Florida police department even released a public service announcement, entitled "Raise Your Voice, Not Your Hands."

Sales of second generation Google Nexus 7 could reach 8 million units in 2013

According to Industry sources, the second generation of the Google Nexus 7 will be launched at the end of this month or early next month. These sources believe that there is a chance for 8 million units of the refreshed model to be sold in 2013. On the other hand, many analysts see that as a number impossible to achieve because of competing models in the Android powered, low-cost 7 inch tablet niche. The second generation model of the Google Nexus 7 is expected to replace the NVIDIA Tegra 3 that is powering the device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor because of the better power efficiency with the Snapdragon chip. The 7 inch screen will have improved resolution of 1980 x 1200, up from the 1280 x 800 resolution seen on the original 7 inch glass. That will raise the pixel density smartly from the current 216ppi. Speaking about the panel, it will offer a narrower bezel, providing the user with more real estate. Most new devices are coming to market these days with a thinner, narrower bezel. The slate will come with a camera on back (5MP) and one on front (1.2MP) and is expected to be priced in the range of $199-$249 for a version with Wi-Fi connectivity.

The original model of the Google Nexus 7 sold about 6 million units thanks to its low price. But with a number of new 7 inch models launched with lower prices, the Google Nexus 7 needs more than just affordability in order to be competitive. Thus, the revised specs, which could help the slate compete enough to reach 8 million in sales.

Furloughed federal employees lash out--and find solidarity--online

Federal employees around the country are facing obligatory work furloughs as a result of budget sequestration, which mandates across-the-board cuts in government spending.

The government belt-tightening is having real-world consequences for thousands of federal workers, contractors and those who rely on federal assistance programs. Over the past few weeks, many federal employees received furlough slips notifying them of immediate work and salary reductions.

Unsurprisingly, few are thrilled about losing 20 percent of their pay, and some are speaking out. They've banded together on the public Facebook group "How I Spent My Furlough Day," using it as a space to vent through personal stories, pictures and videos about how they're coping with the cuts.

Ford might have ignored the 2014 Focus Electric when it updated its range for the 2014 model year, but one aspect has finally changed: The price.

That has now dropped by $4,000, to a starting MSRP of $35,200, down from $39,200.

The change hasn't yet been reflected on Ford's website--which shows the original pricing. Until you click on the 'View window sticker (pdf)' text, that is, which highlights the new pricing alongside the car's efficiency ratings, which remain unchanged.

These prices don't include Ford's delivery charges, which amount to $795. This brings the new net price to $35,995, and if you're eligible, you can then subtract the $7,500 Federal income-tax credit, and any state or local incentives like California's $2,500 purchase rebate.

"The 2014 Focus Electric offers customers a fully-contented, all-electric vehicle option," Ford's Amanda Zusman told Green Car Reports.

"The new starting MSRP of $35,200 keeps us competitive inthe marketplace and is animportant part of our commitment to provide customers with a range of electrified vehicles to choose from."

It isn't only the price that seems to have dropped, either.

As Inside EVs notes, the Focus Electric's 6.6 kW, 240-volt charging time has reduced from 4 hours to 3.6 hours. Range remains the same, an EPA-rated 76 miles, while the car retains its 105 MPGe combined economy--or 32 kWh/100 miles.

So, though the Focus Electric may be unloved by Ford, a lower price may see it loved a little more by customers.

Massachusetts' top securities regulator has hit top Wall Street firms with a blanket of subpoenas, saying he fears elderly people are being targeted for high-risk, alternative investment products.

Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin said on Wednesday that subpoenas have gone out to a group of firms including Morgan Stanley, UBS AG, Fidelity Investments, Bank of America Corp's Merrill Lynch, Wells Fargo & Co and Charles Schwab Corp.

Galvin said a recent investigation into real estate investment trusts (REITs) heightened his concern that elderly investors were being targeted with products too complex for them to understand the underlying risks.

"While these products are not unsuitable in and of themselves, they are accidents waiting to happen when they are sold to inexperienced investors by untrained agents who push the products to score the large commissions associated with alternative investments," Galvin said in a press release.

The subpoenas seek information about the sale of the products to seniors in Massachusetts, and regarding supervision, compliance and training at the firms, Galvin's office said. Alternative investments cited by Galvin included REITs, oil and gas partnerships and private placement offerings.

In May, Galvin's office announced a settlement with five independent broker-dealers who agreed to pay at least $9.6 million in fines and restitution to settle what regulators called their improper sales of non-traded REITs.

Among the companies named on Wednesday, spokespeople for Bank of America and Morgan Stanley declined to comment. A Wells Fargo spokesman said via e-mai: "The only statement we have at this point is that our policy is to cooperate fully with our regulators."

Representatives of the other companies did not immediately respond to questions.

Late to the Chinese auto market, Ford aims to catch up with new cars, new plants, new attitude

CHONGQING, China ? Dave Schoch has one of the toughest jobs at Ford Motor Co.: Catching the competition in the world's biggest car market.

When Schoch arrived in China 13 years ago, the government was building eight-lane freeways in major cities, but bicyclists and pedestrians still filled the streets. The Chinese were buying fewer than 2 million cars and trucks each year, a fraction of the 14.4 million sold in 2000 in the U.S.

When he returned to China last year, Schoch was stunned. The freeways were choked with cars, from inexpensive, Chinese-made Wuling minivans to Mercedes-Benz sedans. The red-hot Chinese economy had more than doubled annual wages, giving millions of people the money to buy a first vehicle or move up to a luxury brand.

"Things turned upside-down," says Schoch, who was named head of Ford's Asia Pacific operations in the fall. "You have to be here and experience it to believe what has happened in the last decade."

Last year, Chinese consumers bought 19 million cars and trucks ? 5 million more than consumers in the U.S. Ford's share of those sales was just 3 percent. Years of corporate chaos and financial trouble slowed Ford's entry into China as its rivals gained a foothold. Together, General Motors and Volkswagen control a third of China's market.

But the race is far from over. China is still a country where just 58 out of every 1,000 people own cars. In the U.S., that number is closer to 800.

Every year, tens of millions of Chinese are reaching the income threshold they need to buy a car, Schoch says. Many analysts predict annual sales in China of 30 million by 2020, almost double the U.S. forecast of 17 million. It's up to Schoch to ensure Ford gets a big chunk of that phenomenal growth.

"I go home each night thinking, 'Have I really tried to move the needle? Are we moving the organization fast enough to take advantage of this? Because I really think we have a golden opportunity here," he says.

Ford wants to double its Chinese market share to 6 percent by 2015. To make that happen, the company is launching six new vehicles in China this year, including two small SUVs called the Kuga and the EcoSport, the Mondeo midsize sedan and the Explorer SUV, which is exported from Chicago. The Lincoln luxury brand will arrive next year.

To meet its goals, the company has undertaken its most ambitious growth since Ford went on a post-war building spree in Michigan 60 years ago.
