Texas Longhorns DBs jockeying for starting jobs; ?No one is safe?

There?s talent in the Longhorns? secondary, but defensive backs coach Duane Akina is going to have to find a way to fit it all together.

Cornerbacks Carrington Byndom and Quandre Diggs are known commodities, but Byndom struggled for the first two months of the 2012 season, and Diggs could very well move to safety to replace Kenny Vaccaro. Senior-to-be Adrian Phillips had a disappointing junior campaign, and his lack of physicality suggests safety might not be his best position. The same could be said for Mykkele Thompson, a tremendous athlete who had a whale of a time tackling anybody as a sophomore (good luck forgetting Trey Millard?s hurdle over him and Phillips). Josh Turner, a cornerback in high school, shined as a safety. Sheroid Evans might be breaking through at corner. Redshirt freshmen Adrian Colbert and Bryson Echols looked strong during Texas? open practices this weekend.

In Big 12 competition, Texas will have to use up to six of its defensive backs. But which ones?

?Really at the moment, no one is safe,? Phillips said Tuesday. ?After the season we had last year that is really where all the coaches? mindsets are. Everywhere across the board, everyone is battling for a position. We are going to practice saying, ?I have to win [those battles] and I have to get better. If I get better, maybe it will raise the next man?s level as well.??
