LONDON (AP) -Substitute Edin Dzeko grabbed a late winner as Manchester City came from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 and revive its challenge for the Premier League title.
The Bosnia striker slammed a powerful finish into the roof of the net in the 86th minute - moments after coming on - to end a run of two straight draws that had dropped the defending champions off the fierce pace set by early leader Chelsea.
Mladen Petric had put Fulham ahead in the 10th with a disputed penalty after John Arne Riise fell under the challenge of Pablo Zabaleta, but Sergio Aguero's first goal of the season had brought City level just before halftime.
The victory keeps Roberto Mancini's unbeaten team four points behind Chelsea, which won 2-1 at Arsenal earlier Saturday.

This year we have been adding a lot more music into our homeschool days. My children are both very artistic in nature and enjoy music, dancing and drawing.?Unfortunately?because we don't have the available funds we have to do all of this from home...which would be fine except I am not musically inclined. It has been such a blessing to receive several music products this year to review and?
?was one of those.
Then I went through the songbook and highlighted important details and the various activities I thought the kids would enjoy (just to make it easier to reference each time we had our music fun, see picture below). The songbook contains several sections which will be broken down further below as I go through how we used Music Together.
The first 15 pages of the book include:
-How to use the book
-Introduction to the Music Together philosophy
-Music Together Teaching Principles
-Types of Songs and Activities
-Working with?Instruments?and Props
-Music Together?and?Children with Special Needs
I gathered all the recommended instruments and props. We already had a music bin with various instruments, what we didn't have on hand we either made or improvised.
Instruments and props you can make or purchase to enhance your musical learning:?
-Egg Shakers (put some rice or beans in plastic eggs and wholla...decorate if desired)
-Rhythm Sticks (any type of sticks that you can clack together will work...wooden spoons work well)
-Train Whistle (we got ours at the Target dollar section)
-Harmonica (we picked ours up at Dollar Tree)
-Triangles
-Tambourines (Dollar Tree sells these too)
-Maracas (another Target dollar section find)
-Scarves (dug some out of my closet the kids really loved using these)
-Drums or Bongos (we made drums using oatmeal?containers?and then decorated them with paper, feathers, etc.)
My kids really liked the scarfs which are used for visible rhythm?activities. They thought waving the scarves to the beat of the music was quite fun.
I really enjoyed the diversity of the music there were fast songs, slow songs, oldies but goody songs, songs in different languages,?instrumental?only songs and heartwarming?lullaby?songs.
Here is video of the kids singing, dancing and playing to 3 songs on the CD.
Types of songs and?activities:
There are 7 different types of songs and activities used throughout the songbook.
-Fingerplay
-Focus activity
-Instruments and props
-Lap song/dyad
-Large movement
-Lullaby
-Ostinati, part singing, and rounds
-Partner song
-Play-song
-Sit 'n' sing
-Small movement
-Songbook play
-Songs without words
-Substitution
-Taps 'n' claps
-Verse variations
-Vocables
Because there are so many activities it was very easy to change things up whenever we listened to a song again. If you happen to run out of activities you can easily adapt the special needs or younger age group activities to fit your childs needs.?There is even a?FUN song game?you can play on their website for FREE.
Example lessons:
Splishing and Splashing?-?For all ages and settings - have children sway to the beat, say the "I like to" ?phrase in an easy conversational manner. Then have them make up appropriate movements for each "splishing and splashing" phrase. Suggestion for dishes phrase - move your hands as if holding a plate with one hand and washing with the other.
The final section of the songbook is the Reference Section:
This section is 11 pages and includes information about Music Together and how to become involved with its licensed applications. There is also a list of the Music Together song collections, glossary and guitar reference chart.More About Music Together:

NEW YORK???An Occupy Wall Street protester has lost his latest bid to prevent the Manhattan district attorney's office from using his tweets against him, clearing the way for the judge overseeing the case to unseal the tweets and give them to prosecutors.
In a case that has drawn the attention of electronic privacy advocates, a New York judge denied a request from the protester, Malcolm Harris, to put the tweets on ice while his appeal is pending.
Harris, 23, was arrested along with hundreds of others during a mass march across the Brooklyn Bridge in October 2011 for obstructing vehicular traffic.
Prosecutors subpoenaed Twitter for several months of his tweets, which are no longer available online, to combat his argument that police appeared to lead the protest onto the bridge before turning around and arresting them for walking on the roadway.
Electronic privacy advocates worry a precedent could be set that would make it more difficult for social media users to challenge law enforcement's use of their online words against them.
Twitter and Harris have unsuccessfully fought the subpoena, which has been repeatedly upheld as lawful by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino. The San Francisco-based company finally surrendered the tweets earlier this month after Sciarrino threatened it with contempt and a hefty fine.
Sciarrino had agreed to seal the tweets until a state Supreme Court judge ruled on Harris' latest request for a stay of Sciarrino's order upholding the subpoena. The judge, Carol Huff, denied the request this week.
Martin Stolar, Harris' attorney, said he was "disappointed" but would continue to pursue other legal challenges.
Sciarrino is reviewing the tweets and will provide to prosecutors those that appear relevant to the criminal case.
Twitter still has an appeal of Sciarrino's order pending in an intermediate appellate court, scheduled to be heard in November.
Harris also has a separate civil action pending, claiming Sciarrino overstepped his authority; prosecutors have asked a court to dismiss that lawsuit as an improper attempt to circumvent the normal appellate procedure.
Harris' criminal trial is scheduled for December.
The case is People v. Harris, Criminal Court of the City of New York, No. 2011NY080152.

Makers and sellers of consumer-electronics devices have been releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here's a look at selected companies that report unit sales on phones, tablet computers and other devices. Some companies including Samsung Electronics Co. do not release data on unit sales.
? July 19: Microsoft Corp. says it shipped 1.1 million Xbox 360 consoles during the April-June period, down from 1.7 million a year earlier.
Nokia Corp. says sales of smartphones dropped 39 percent from a year ago to 10.2 million in the second quarter. The company blamed "strong momentum" of competing smartphones. All regions showed a decline except North America, where sales of the new Windows-based Lumia line offset declines in traditional Symbian devices. Sales of all cellphones fell 5 percent to 83.7 million.
? July 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 26 million iPhones, 28 percent more than a year ago. It also sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase. But average selling prices for both products were down. Apple sold 4 million Macs, a 2 percent increase, and 6.8 million iPods, a 10 percent decline.
TomTom says it sold 1.7 million personal-navigation devices in North America, down from 2.1 million a year ago. In Europe, it sold 2.4 million, down from 2.8 million. TomTom says market share was relatively flat at 45 percent in Europe, but down to 19 percent from 23 percent in North America because of a GPS chip product issue.
AT&T Inc. says it activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million in the same period a year ago. Much of the decline came because AT&T subscribers are holding on to their phones longer.
? July 25: Nintendo Co. says it sold 710,000 Wii units in the April-June quarter, down from 1.56 million a year ago. Nintendo is coming out with a successor, the Wii U, this year. It is forecasting 10.5 million units for the full fiscal year, which ends in March 2013. The company, meanwhile, sold 540,000 DS units, down from 1.44 million a year ago, and it sold 1.86 million 3DS units, up from 710,000 a year ago.
? Aug. 1: Garmin Ltd. says it sold 3.9 million GPS navigation and other devices in the second quarter, up 4 percent from a year earlier.
? Aug. 2: Sony Corp. says it sold 2.8 million PlayStation units, down from 3.2 million a year earlier. The figures cover both PlayStation 3 and the older PlayStation 2. Sales of the PlayStation Portable and Vita devices were at 1.4 million, down from 1.8 million a year earlier.
? Sept. 6: Samsung says global sales of its Galaxy S III smartphone have surpassed 20 million in a little more than three months. Samsung Electronics Co. launched the flagship smartphone powered by Google's Android operating system in Europe in late May. The U.S. got it in June.
? Sept. 24: Apple Inc. says that it sold more than 5 million units of the iPhone 5 in the three days since its launch, fewer than analysts had expected. The sales tally is a record for any phone, but it beats last year's iPhone 4S launch only by a small margin. Apple said then that it sold 4 million phones in the first three days.
? Sept. 25: Research in Motion Ltd. CEO Thorsten Heins says he is convinced that the company's BlackBerry phone is poised to regain its stature as a trailblazing device even as many investors fret about its potential demise. Heins took the stage at a conference for mobile applications developers to rally support for the upcoming release of BlackBerry 10, a new operating system that RIM is touting as its salvation after years of blundering. Investors appeared to be heartened by what they heard and saw. The company's stock gained 30 cents, or nearly 5 percent, to $6.60. That's still far below the stock's peak price of about $148, reached in June 2008.
? Sept. 27: Research in Motion Ltd. posts another large loss in the second quarter, but it's not quite as bad as analysts expected. The company shipped 7.4 million BlackBerry smartphones in the quarter, down from 10.6 million last year. RIM says there will be "continued pressure on its operating results" for the rest of its fiscal year.

Many of us grew up on Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, and any number of other movies and TV series which featured highly futuristic technology such as wristwatch video cameras, holograms, and transporter beams. Some of those things are still just the stuff of imagination (no one can "beam us up" just yet). Others have become reality. In some cases, the technology we've developed is actually superior to the fantastic tech that used to hold us glued to the movie screen in awe.
From motorized wall systems to cell phones to an ultra-silent TV lift, here are the top three ways in which our actual technology of today is better than the science fiction writers and movie producers envisioned the technology of the distant future to be:
Our technology is quieter. Have you seen one of today's ultra-silent TV lifts? While they're not in everyone's home yet, they are quickly becoming a popular luxury item. With the push of a button, you can lower your television from the ceiling or raise it from the floor or a cabinet. Nothing like the whirring, whizzing and buzzing similar technology makes in old sci-fi movies, an ultra-silent TV lift is just that: very quiet.
Our tech devices are smaller. Sure, your favorite space opera featured com-links that allowed you to speak to people across the galaxy, but they were huge. Today's cell phones fit into the palm of your hand nicely. The same goes for computers. The laptop or PC you're reading this on has more capacity than the computers used to calculate the particulars of our first trip to the moon.
Our tech devices are readily available. The modern home is becoming more and more high tech every day. These days, it's easy to buy motorized wall systems which allow you to raise or lower a TV, projector or other electronic equipment. Everyone has a computer. Even the poorest among us has gadgets and gizmos which were the stuff of science fiction two generations ago.
Chances are, you already have a laptop computer and many other high tech amenities. If you don't have an ultra-silent TV lift yet, chances are you'll be adding one soon enough (they're more affordable than you may think). While it's unlikely that you'll be buying a laser gun any time soon, the days of small computers, digital cameras, ultra silent TV lifts, and motorized wall systems is upon us

A San Diego woman accused of strangling her infant son, and throwing him out of a third-story window to his death was ?calm and unconcerned about the baby,? a police sergeant testified Tuesday.
Zewoinesh Badasso, 32, of North Park, faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of her 7-month-old son, identified in court records as David N.
Badasso's defense attorney said her client told her she was opening a third-story window while holding her baby on Sept. 7 when?the boy fell to his death.
For more, visit NBCSanDiego.com
But in an interview outside the courtroom, defense attorney Amy McDonald indicated she will not argue that Badasso is innocent, but will instead claim that Badasso suffered from ?post-partum psychosis?.
McDonald said witnesses told her that Badasso was a very loving mother who snapped and killed her child. She said Badasso might not have a memory of what actually happened that day.
A stranger called police?after finding the baby on the ground below a unit inside Park View Apartments on 39th Street in North Park.
Deputy District Attorney Nicole Rooney said the medical examiner determined that David had been strangled and had found ligature marks on the boy's neck, and other injuries that showed he had been beaten.
McDonald said her client was in custody when told of David?s death and appeared to be shocked and saddened.
However, a police sergeant who was present inside the apartment when officers questioned Badasso said she appeared uncaring.

Three executives from troubled imaging giant Olympus have pleaded guilty to boosting the company's true value in 2007 and 2008 by concealing losses in financial statements. Former chairman Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, ex-auditor Hideo Yamada and former VP Hisashi Mori were charged with fraud in the scandal, which was brought to light last year by ex-CEO Bob Woodford. He was fired by the Olympus board for blowing the whistle, but reportedly received a large settlement for his troubles. The company has since confessed to cooking the books as far back as the 90's to hide investment losses, and revealed in 2011 that it had a billion dollars less value than previously stated. That, along with the poor performance of its camera division, has forced Olympus to seek a partner or raise capital to survive.

I spent the last ten days on the shores of Oahu, Hawaii with my family. Tough life, as those with a searing case of false modesty might intone. And they'd (I'd) be right. I spent most of my time in the ocean or snaking around the lazy river at Aulani. Not a bad way to spend a few days, all things considered. Since I was in the water more than I was on land, I used my iPhone to do all of the image capturing on this trip, preferring raucous family card games and clocking serious hours reading Murakami to spending my usual time behind the camera.?
Here's an idea of how we Daileys do family vacation:
At left: My flea market find. And you can bet I wheedled and nitpicked and bartered them within an inch of their sanity before bagging this beaut at a respectable price.?
At right: Is this the face of a girl who'd pay asking price for that necklace? Plz.?
As typical as a vacation photo can possibly be, even in the Digital Age: Two girls, two bikes, and my aunt's thumb.?
Yes, I'm high-fiving a sea turtle. Keep a cap on your frothing jealousy, people.?
I had to employ some serious coercion to get my dad to pull over so I could get this shot. Aren't you glad you did, Pops??

TEL RIFAAT, Syria (AP) ? The days are still warm across the fertile plains of northern Syria around Aleppo, but night brings a chill ? an ominous harbinger of winter's approach and the deepening of the already severe humanitarian crisis gripping a country wracked by civil war.
Warm temperatures and plentiful food have cushioned the blow somewhat for hundreds of thousands of Syrians displaced from their homes or living in refugee camps across the border. But the arrival of near-freezing temperatures could mean greater suffering and even deaths from exposure, as international aid agencies scramble to cope.
Among the first things to go will be the practice of sleeping outside to avoid the artillery and airstrikes that rain down late night death on homes.
"Most people sleep in the fields at night, out of fear of the bombardments of the towns," said Abu Mohammed, who has taken to sleeping in the olive orchards outside Tel Rifaat, a rebel-controlled town north of Aleppo. "In the winter the suffering will only increase."
Like many people in Syria, he asked that his real name not be used for fear of retribution should the government retake his town.
At a news conference earlier this month, actress Angelina Jolie, a special envoy for the U.N. Refugee Agency, reported that many of the refugees living in camps along the Turkish border were worried about the approach of cold weather.
"It is a very large concern for all of us, and I hope we can all work together to make sure that ... nobody freezes to death in this very frightening time," she said.
As the second winter approaches in an 18-month-old conflict that has claimed more than 20,000 lives, fighting has spread to many more parts of the country and people's resources are dangerously low.
Abu Mustafa, Mohammed's brother, said the family survived last winter on savings, but now the financial situation is much worse.
"Last winter, people had money, but now people have nothing because there is no work," he said. "Most of the work was in Aleppo and most went there for jobs, but now they can't."
An agricultural breadbasket, northern Syria has food, but not everyone can afford it. In many cases, families are forced to flee to refugee camps on the border not only for fear of fighting but because they have run out of money for food.
The length of the conflict is also wearing people down, leaving them even more vulnerable, said Sybella Wilkes of the U.N. Refugee Agency.
"The more people are displaced, the longer they are living in difficult situations of hardship, the more stretched their coping skills are," she said.
The U.N. agency is planning a new international appeal to help the refugees on the borders, as well as those still inside the country, including winterizing tents and distributing blankets and warm clothing.
"Already ... the displaced are suffering from cold in the evening ? this is a real concern," Wilkes said. She said the number of registered refugees has far exceeded earlier estimates, growing more than 12-fold from about 20,000 in June to 250,000 today.
Another 1.5 million Syrians are displaced inside the country, while an additional 1 million are in urgent need of assistance because they have run out of money for food and other essentials, according to U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliassan. A $180 million emergency response plan is only half-funded, he added.
Temperatures during the winter months can drop below freezing in northern Syria, and it often rains heavily. Most houses are designed to deal with the scorching summers, but are not well insulated against the cold.
Neighboring Turkey has already taken in 80,000 refugees in overflowing camps and for weeks had to temporarily close its borders to new refugees.
At the Bab al-Salameh border crossing, more than 5,000 Syrians are camped out in hangars once used by customs officials to inspect trucks ? structures without walls, running water or electricity.
"When winter comes, how will I keep them warm?" asked Fatima Abdallah, gesturing worriedly at her tiny newborn twins as she sat on the concrete floor. Turkey has started admitting a few hundred Syrians at a time, but it's unclear if everyone will be housed in the camps by the time the cold weather sets in.
While food supplies seem to be holding steady, the biggest challenge will be staying warm and preparing food. The parts of the country outside government control have to rely on smuggled supplies of gasoline and heating oil, which have already tripled in price.
Smugglers drive to government-controlled areas, usually to the east, load up their cars with butane tanks and jerry cans of gasoline and drive them back to the rebel-controlled areas.
"There are already shortages of kerosene used to heat homes and there is also a shortage of fuel and cooking gas. And when winter hits, the prices will go up for everything," said Marixie Mercado of UNICEF, noting that the displaced tend to live in public buildings like schools or stadiums that cannot easily be heated.
Many also have taken refuge in construction sites or half-built houses without windows, which will offer little protection against the country's wet winters.
UNICEF is stockpiling supplies, including baby blankets and thermal underwear for children, as well as stoves to heat schools ? assuming the fuel is available.
"People are cutting down trees to get wood," said Abu Mustafa, relying on wood-burning stoves to cook as gas supplies have run out. "We cut off a bunch of dead branches in our orchards and collected them, but the next time we went to our fields to pick them up, someone had stolen them. People are getting desperate."
International agencies are working with local partners, particularly the Syrian Red Crescent to distribute food and supplies around the country, said Ben Parker of the U.N.'s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The Red Crescent can cross the lines of the conflict, but even then, their efforts have been stymied by the proliferating checkpoints and rising violence.
"It will be a bitter winter," Parker warned.

Watch a professional pianist play and you'll be struck at how effortlessly their hands skip across the keys.
Making an animated character do the same is much harder, so researchers from the University of California, Davis, have built an algorithm designed to make computer-generated hands tickle the ivories far more realistically.
Their software auomatically generates a 3D animation of piano-playing hands based solely on inputted music. The software analyses a music file, then builds a pair of animated hands playing the song. Developed with colleagues by Davis computer scientist Yuanfeng Zhu, the system is based on the idea that virtuoso pianists will always move their hands in a way that relaxes their body and saves energy.
To achieve this using software, Zhu calculates the most efficient path for the 3D fingers to take over the keys. Finger positions are calculated for every chord in a piece of music, as is the motion of each hand throughout the piece. The algorithm also takes the position of every finger into account at all times, even when that finger is not involved in the next chord. This ensures the animated hands play the music in as relaxed a manner as possible.
Although the 3D hands look rather uncanny, their motion matches a human player rather well. The researchers suggest that their technique is realistic enough to be used to self-teach the piano, by using motion capture software to compare your performance with the algorithm. The paper notes that it would be possible to apply the animation to other instruments, such as violins and flutes.
"Although our system can generate plausible and reasonably realistic piano playing for standard music, it is not capable of generating emotional piano playing that re?ects a personal understanding of the music and player's performance background," the paper concludes. "This is the main future work we will be pursuing."

UPDATED 1:03 p.m. EDT: Five years after the housing bust, the U.S. economy is showing signs of finally bottoming out.
Americans are on the move again after putting their lives on hold and staying put. More young adults are leaving their parents' homes to take a chance with college or the job market, while once-sharp declines in births are leveling off and poverty is slowing.
Even the stagnant housing market, still weak, is showing improvement as sales and construction begin to climb.
New 2011 census figures offer glimmers of hope in an economic recovery that technically began in mid-2009. The annual survey, supplemented with unpublished government figures as of March 2012, covers a year in which unemployment fell modestly from 9.6 percent to 8.9 percent.
Not all is well. The jobless rate remains high at 8.1 percent. While housing sales have more recently gained, home ownership last year dropped for a fifth straight year to 64.6 percent, the lowest in more than a decade, due to stringent financing rules and a shift to renting. More Americans than ever are turning to food stamps, while residents in housing that is considered "crowded" held steady at 1 percent, tied for the highest since 2003.
A fresh set of current economic data released Thursday also remained mixed. The Conference Board's index of leading indicators, designed to forecast future economic activity, dipped 0.1 percent in August after rising 0.5 percent in July and dropping 0.5 percent in June. And the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell only slightly last week.
Taken as a whole, however, analysts say the census data, which track changing patterns in everyday life, provide the latest evidence of a stabilizing U.S. economy. Coming after the devastating housing bust in 2006, such a leveling off would mark an end to the longest and most pernicious economic decline since World War II.
"We may be seeing the beginning of the American family's recovery from the Great Recession," said Andrew Cherlin, a professor of sociology and public policy at Johns Hopkins University. He pointed in particular to the upswing in mobility and to young men moving out of their parents' homes, both signs that more young adults were testing out job prospects.
"It could be the modest number of new jobs or simply the belief that the worst is over," Cherlin said.
Richard Freeman, an economist at Harvard University, said the data point to a "fragile recovery," with the economy still at risk of falling back into recession, depending in part on who is president and whether Congress averts a "fiscal cliff" of deep government spending cuts and higher taxes in January. "Given the situation in the world economy, we are doing better than many other countries," he said. "Government policies remain critical."
The census figures also show slowing growth in the foreign-born population, which increased to 40.4 million, or 13 percent of the U.S. population. Last year's immigration increase of 400,000 people was the lowest in a decade, reflecting a minimal gain of Latinos after many Mexicans already in the U.S. opted to return home. Some 11 million people are estimated to be in the U.S. illegally.
The bulk of new immigrants are now higher-skilled workers from Asian countries such as China and India, contributing to increases in the foreign-born population in California, New York, Illinois and New Jersey.
Income inequality varied widely by region. The gap between rich and poor was most evident in the District of Columbia, New York, Connecticut, Louisiana and New Mexico, where immigrant or minority groups were more numerous. By county, Berkeley in West Virginia had the biggest jump in household income inequality over the past year, a result of fast suburban growth just outside the Washington-Baltimore region, where pockets of poor residents and newly arrived, affluent commuters live side by side.
As a whole, Americans were slowly finding ways to get back on the move. About 12 percent of the nation's population, or 36.5 million, moved to a new home, up from a record low of 11.6 percent in 2011.
Among young adults 25 to 29, the most mobile age group, moves also increased to 24.6 percent from a low of 24.1 percent in the previous year. Longer-distance moves, typically for those seeking new careers in other regions of the country, rose modestly from 3.4 percent to 3.8 percent.
Fewer living with mom and dad
Less willing to rely on parents, roughly 5.6 million Americans ages 25-34, or 13.6 percent, lived with Mom and Dad, a decrease from 14.2 percent in the previous year. Young men were less likely than before to live with parents, down from 18.6 percent to 16.9 percent; young women living with parents edged higher to 10.4 percent, up from 9.7 percent.
The increases in mobility coincide with modest improvements in the job market as well as increased school enrollment, especially in college and at advanced-degree levels.
Marriages dipped to a low of just 50.8 percent among adults 18 and over, compared with 57 percent in 2000. Among young adults 25-34, marriage was at 43.1 percent, also a new low, part of a longer-term cultural trend in which people are opting to marry at later ages and often cohabitate with a partner first.
Births, on the other hand, appeared to be coming back after years of steep declines. In 2011, the number of births dipped by 55,000, or 1 percent, to 4.1 million, the smallest drop since the pre-recession peak in 2008, according to Kenneth Johnson, a sociology professor and senior demographer at the University of New Hampshire. More recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also show that once-precipitous drops in births are slowing.
"There are signs that young adults have turned a corner," said Mark Mather, associate vice president at the Population Reference Bureau. "More young adults are staying in school, which will increase their potential earnings when the job market bounces back. It's going to take some time, but we should see more young adults entering the labor force, buying homes and starting families as economic conditions improve."
While poverty slowed, food stamp use continued to climb. Roughly 14.9 million, or 13 percent of U.S. households, received food stamps, the highest level on record, meaning that 1 in 8 families was receiving the government aid. Oregon led the nation at 18.9 percent, or nearly 1 in 5, due in part to generous state provisions that expand food stamp eligibility to families making 185 percent of the poverty level ? roughly $3,400 a month for a family of four. Oregon was followed by more rural or more economically hard-hit states, including Michigan, Tennessee, Maine, Kentucky and Mississippi. Wyoming had the fewest households on food stamps, at 5.9 percent.
Government programs did much to stave off higher rates of poverty. While the official poverty rate for 2011 remained stuck at 15 percent, or a record 46.2 million people, the government formula did not take into account noncash aid such as food stamps, which the Census Bureau estimates would have lifted 3.9 million people above the poverty line. If counted, that safety net would have lowered the poverty rate to 13.7 percent. And without expanded unemployment benefits, which began expiring in 2011, roughly 2.3 million people would have fallen into poverty.
Some 17 states showed statistically significant increases in the poverty rate, led by Louisiana, Oregon, Arizona, Georgia and Hawaii. Among large metropolitan areas, McAllen, Texas, led the nation in poverty, at 38 percent, followed by Fresno, Calif., El Paso, Texas, and Bakersfield, Calif. In contrast, the Washington, D.C., metro area had the lowest level of poverty, about 8 percent, followed by Bridgeport, Conn., and Ogden, Utah.
"There are signs among all these measures that the multiple downsides of the Great Recession have bottomed out, which is good news especially for young people who have seen their lives put on hold," said William H. Frey, a demographer at Brookings Institution. "There is some light at the end of the tunnel."
