1. STATS Inc. came up with a number that shows a strength of Ryan Tannehill's - and how Mike Sherman is playing to it. The statistic was passed along by Sports Illustrated's Peter King in his great Monday column:? "Through the first five weeks of the season, not only were the Miami Dolphins leading all NFL teams in use of the no-huddle, running it on 58.9 percent of the snaps, but also they were more productive in the no-huddle, averaging nearly a yard more per play when they didn't huddle than when they did ... with a rookie quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, running the controls."
Sherman and Joe Philbin are intent on using the up-tempo offense. This adds to the reasons why.
2. Think Dave Wannstedt would've run a fake punt with 4:15 left from his own 40-yard line like Joe Philbin did? Do you think Tony Sparano would have? Any coach dating to when Jimmy Johnson rolled the dice on occasion on the sidelines? The Dolphins were outplayed for much of the day by St. Louis . But as I write in my column today this one gutsy call swung the ending their way.
3. What's the bigger surprise, the Dolphins or the Patriots at 3-3?
4. It took Olindo Mare years to understand the swirling winds at Sun Life Stadium. They sure came into play on Sunday in accounting for St. Louis kicker Greg Zuerlein's three misses from 37, 52 and the final one from 66 yards. The Rams are accustomed to kicking indoors at home. It's a completely different game outdoors for placekickers and Sun Life Stadium is a great example of that.
5. Anybody have a better Sunday than Jeff Ireland? Ryan Tannehill keeps showing he's the real deal. Jonathan Martin keeps getting mentioned less and less - a great thing for a rookie offensive tackle. Olivier Vernon had two sacks. Lamar Miller didn't do much of anything, but his talent is obvious, if his pro skills still raw.? ?
